“You know, I have thought that by this age I would have been in good job and a steady relationship. I have neither so I’m considering moving to X city. I got a job offer from there and I’ve been considering taking it or not for a while. I mean, one out of two isn’t bad. It’s not like either a job or a relationship is holding me back in this city.....”
I’ve loved reading your articles and they’ve really helped me recognize what’s been tickling the corner of my self-awareness lately about my self-worth being directly related to why I always end up dating people that don’t treat me well and are emotionally unavailable. The one thing that I’m trying to figure out in this article and in my current situation is – how do you discern between a relationship (casual or exclusive) ending due to the other person being emotionally unavailable vs. being emotionally available and being turned off by your insecurities? At the end of the day, I recognize that both are directly related to my lack of self-love and that is what needs to be fixed, but in the former case, if I had previously fixed this it would have resulted in me ending the relationship as soon as I recognized the other person was emotionally unavailable/disrespecting me and in the latter it seems like the relationship would have had a chance at working out. I feel like it’s much easier to forgive myself for not holding boundaries and walking away when I knew I should have than for literally being the reason something potentially great didn’t work out..
You deserve better.. don’t contact him, it’s desperate… I know it’s hard, but respect and love yourself. Take it from a girl who took 13 years to get out. He doesn’t respect you nor your relationship .. he has control, knows you’ll be there should he want to return. Please, take time to really determine if you want to spend life with someone who breaks up with you every few months? Hits on other girls? Hangs up on you? He isn’t invested in the dynamic.. don’t give more than you receive.
I have been trying to go no contact for quite some time now but I fail every now and then. I have deleted him from Facebook, I have deleted his contact information, I have even deleted Facebook so that I wouldn’t be tempted but somehow I found ways to reach him. I miss him terribly and he told me he needed time and space to focus on himself and we would reassess in a few months. I refuse for this relationship to be over and I feel like I haven’t moved on a tiny bit since we broke up 6 months ago. I have decided to start working out, move apartments, plan a big trip… but somehow the only person I really want to share my stories with is him. I am flying through Vancouver (where he now lives) in August and I thought I would text him for a quick coffee at the airport. I hope he will want to see me, I really do. I need some sort of closure and if not, a way to reconnect.
Hi so I recently had this problem with an ex whom I’ve been on and off with and a couple days ago he asked if I was willing to be in a 3 person relationship with a “close friend” of his and it turns out he’s been talking to her behind my back and well after talking about it with him ..I decided that he should just leave me alone and not text me but he still texted that he was going to be there for me if needed to talk to him about anything ..I don’t know if I should respond to this ..or how to to respond to it …
We broke up so sudden. I said one thing he didn’t like and it was like a switch. He had flipped just like that. Then all of a sudden all these problems he’s been thinking about has came up. I’m still trying to understand them. I’m still trying to understand which reasonings he said are actually true and which aren’t. It’s been 4 days, ive texted him once. No reply. I havent tried again, and I refuse to. I would hate to push him away further.
Who doesn’t like to receive nice compliments? Your boyfriend deserves it from you. Compliment him when you happen to see him. You don’t have to give too much and it doesn’t have to be so exaggerated. It’s enough to compliment on his clothes or his haircut. Even better, you can just say that meeting him has helped you forget all the tiredness you’ve been feeling for this week.
So me and my boyfriend live together for about a year now. We were dating for almost 3 years. He broke up with me few days ago. I’m still at his house. We haven’t talked at all but when he gets home and lays down with me in bed. He hugs me so hard and doesn’t let go until he falls asleep. That’s all we been doing after we broke up. What does it mean? Reason we broke up is because he claims he isn’t happy and that he doesn’t know who he is anymore
Hi Alexandra, This is exactly what happens to me. A lot. Do everything by the book and it does not produce results. Generally you suddenly see these guys with some bland Miss Piggy woman a month or so later. From what I have understood so far, these men think they are not good enough for you. Unfortunately, I never found any way of solving this. Once they believe this, you cannot change it. Only he can. Just find a guy who thinks he IS worthy of you. Very hard to find. Classy agency is your best bet.
There's a fine line between playing a little hard to get and acting totally indifferent. When you're out to dinner, make sure not to constantly check your phone or dart your eyes around the room. It's dating 101, but show you're interested in what they have to say and ask about their life. "People appreciate and want to be with someone who makes them feel amazing," Trespicio says. "If you rock their world and they love being with you, why would they ever want to be with anyone else?"
Spending Saturday morning in the soup kitchen or helping an elderly person carry his groceries may help your partner see you in a more serious light. In a recent British study, people rated potential sexual partners to be more attractive for a long-term relationship if they had altruistic qualities. "Giving back to others shows your good heart and integrity, and although they may not consciously think that far in the future, partners are subconsciously assessing maternal traits in a woman to see what kind of mother she'd be," Kelman says. I met a guy on a website some while ago, we met and it went great – was long distance. After a year, i didnt hear from him. Fast forward to last year September, i heard from him out of the blue, we chatted again for almost 2 months. We were to meet somewhere, but he didnt answer me back with a time. Was i being messed with? ( he ‘s very busy with his work, 1 kid at school). Should i just forget about him?
Thank you for reading this article and I am glad you found it interesting. There are several reasons why a man pulls away and stops contact suddenly without giving you any explanation. The important thing now, is for you to take time and reflect on this relationship. This time is for your personal growth and to rebuild your confidence. You are on the right path by working on your self and learning that you deserve so much more. I know that you truly care for him, because as you stated you have allowed him into your life several times. Keep busy and focus on what you need and try something new. I am not sure if you will ever understand why he became all talk and no action. Take this experience and grow from it so that you can have the healthy relationship you so deserve.
I’ve been dating this guy for about 6 weeks or so. Yes, early days I know, but we have passed a lot of these things. I’ve met his brother, his casual friends and a lot of his close friends. Natural since we’ve known each other for 8 years really. Anyway I feel like I’ve ruined something great. We try and have a date a week, very casual ones though, we feel good around each other, talk is easy, we support each other, have some similar interests and hobbies, and the sex is great. It was only how one date night he was sick and I organised an easy night at his where I would bring over dinner, watch a movie and just hang out. He told me he wasn’t up to it and wanted some alone time. I get that. I have those days too. I also get that plans come up and that if there is a friend you can only see once in a blue moon then you take it. But, does it have to be the same night? Do I have to find out through a third person that he went to a party while sick on the night he wanted to be alone? Now in past relationships I’ve done the bad thing, let these things slide, hurt me and reward them for it; but I didn’t want to do that. I messaged him today – not trusting my voice – with something along the lines of ‘since you believe in honesty is the best policy, next time tell me alone time just means time with anyone but me.’ I told him I’ve been in that type of relationship before and I was really hurt by it. He said he understood and it was inconsiderate before slipping in the whole thing of ‘personally, i’m not looking for a serious relationship right now.’. Ok, I get that. Just shy of two months dating (even though we’ve known each other for 8 years) and we are young! We are only 22. I agreed with him but he also knows that down the line those feelings on my end might change. I also said that if they change for him to let me know since I don’t want to get hurt and I don’t want him to be either. I’ve been in the whole one sided relationship before and the guy really hurt me in that situation. I feel like I’ve ruined it by telling him how I feel since he just slipped in that line and it just felt like another blow. I like this guy, I could see a potential relationship in the future but I’m just scared that even though I said I don’t want a label that he thinks that since i added that months down the line that could change. When that time comes I’m just wondering how to reach him to move from just casual dating to a proper relationship.
3.5 years ago he was my friend.we have 100s of mutual friend from school. We shared every thing we eat everyday how close friend we were.we met sometimes.I falled in love with him after 3 months of friendship.I felt so much pain inside because of insecurity because he did not know i am in love. After many thought oneday i told him that I am in love with u so badly. That day he said “Dont misunderstand me.I never said I love u.This is my last and final message to u.” Then he blocked me from every social media.
Last message I told him that I’ll let him having time there to get things done after he told me that he’s not struggling with everything. (he has lots of extra expenses for this move too) He said he has anxiety about kids moving away (where we are now and new location is about 13 hours fly) but anyway he will prepare everything for them to move smoothly.
But now, he is pulling away. Slowly but surely. I’m so lost. I’m trying to give him space but I’m scared he will go away forever. I don’t want that so I’m keeping my shut but I’m just so confused. I don’t know what to do. I love him dearly so much still (I have not expressed that as I’m conscious of the consequences of these things especially with an ex and what we went through).
I experienced this just recently with my man as he was really stressed out with work and started being distant. I backed off and did not call or text him. I started letting him do all the work and it only took about a week for him to miss me like crazy. He even said he didn’t know what had come over him but he couldn’t stop thinking about me all day. In that time, I started a new workout and got busy. He loved that and now he’s giving me all this attention again. Don’t be scared to give your man space ladies and do you. It’s healthy and helps you to take better care of you too.
You know, there's a very thin line between making him miss you and making him feel ignored. He might construe to your unavailability as your lack of interest in the relationship, and may seem to mull over it from a totally different perspective this time. Excessively contrived situations, if gone wrong, lead to tensions in between, and may totally yield unexpected results. Believe me, figuring out ways to make your boyfriend miss you is an easy task, if fairly contrived, since a little absence is healthy for every relationship. And well, since I'm dishing out relationship advice, here I conclude with the last bit - leave a part of yourself with him whenever and wherever you go. Express your feelings to him in extraordinary ways. Leave a written note that you'll be back, and that you love him. Tell him that you miss him already. And when you're back, well, you'll be surprised. Swear.

"...in examining women's marital quality and men's emotional investments in marriage, we find that dyadic commitment to institutional ideals about marriage and women's contentment with the division of household tasks are more critical. We also show that men's marital emotion work is a very important determinant of women's marital quality. We conclude by noting that "her" marriage is happiest when it combines elements of the new and old: that is, gender equity and normative commitment to the institution of marriage."1
In june( we had been in touch since March) I went to visit him, he had told me he doesn’t want a relationship, the feeling of being emotionally available on that level wasn’t a good feeling, which I understood. So I went to visit, and we hit it off, to me it was right back to where it was when we first started seeing each other. I have gone to see him every month since June, he told me he didn’t want a relationship, as we continued to see each other things seemed to change, he was getting close, I asked him ” but you don’t want a relationship” his answer seemed to change, he was affectionate, I met his daughter, I met his daughters mom, he introduced me to his co workers, his friends and included me in his life.
It has been about a month and a half since we broke up. He broke up with me. At first we were talking constantly. Then I tried to not answer him so often or atleast wait a while to answer. We have a cat together that stays with him and he wants me to see our cat. But sometimes it seems like he wants me to come over to see him too. We stopped talking for about a week and when he was drunk he called me and asked me for a ride. I agreed but I didn’t want to end up staying with him. When I dropped him off he asked for a hug. I said sure. When I hugged him he told me he missed me and wanted me to come inside and see our cat. We ended up having sex. Which I regretted as soon as it happened. We talked the next day and agreed that we shouldn’t do that again. We talked a little bit after that but I was so sad. So for myself I stopped talking to him. He messaged me a couple days later just to talk. We had a really good conversation. He called me again when he was drunk about 5 days ago. On Christmas Eve. He wanted me to come over and cuddle with him and just hang out. I was really hesitant but agreed. When I went over there we just talked and laughed. It was nice. We talked the next day basically all day. Then he had to work so we stopped. I messaved him the next day telling him to drive safe if he had to work cause it snowed. He told me he was going out but he wasn’t at work. I felt like it was weird that he told me he was going out. Especially since we aren’t together anymore. But I didn’t say anything. I just told him have a good night and drive safe. He didn’t respond. I am trying to not talk to him and just leave him be. But I want to be with him and I miss him a lot. What am I suppose to do?
Eric I wanted to say thank you! All of your articles remind everyone of what is really important about life and happiness! I realize that it is time to stop chasing ones that don’t want to be chased by me! I know I have a lot to offer but I am excited to say I am not scared to be alone I love my life, my friends! I love this article because it just helps remind me that I don’t want a guy that brings out the crazy if he likes my vibe and we click I am not gonna worry cuz he will want more! If it changes stop worrying or trying because you don’t want to work on something that is onesided! You have opened my eyes to see that if I can’t see my worth and value how can I expect anyone else! So keep writing your honest and inspiring pieces! I am so excited about my future and all the adventures this year could bring! Xoxoxo
Hello .. my ex and I broke up about 5 days ago . We were in a long-distance relationship for about 4 months . Everything went well and we managed to see each other a couple of time despite the distance . Everything went ok and then one day everything changed, he became closed and distance from me , he had troubles with his studies (and felt confused about his future and studies), because of the distance things became harder , I felt that I want be there for him in this difficult time but can’t ,because he is distancing from me -and I can’t be there for someone that don’t allow me to do it . Each day I became more and more cold and distance from me ,until I talk to him about it and he told me that he can’t deal with everything right now ,and he need me right now next to him in live and not through the phone . 4 days ago I spoke with him and told him that I love him a lot and want to be with and through this hard times and wish there was a way to help him , and that I understand that he need time alone to think about everything , and that it doesn’t mean I give up on him . He respond me in a cold way “thank you,I appreciate it “ no I love you ,no affection nothing . And then I offered him maybe to come visit me , I thought that was a good idea ,but he refused and said he can’t and he can’t continue togheter , the distance is to difficult for him especially now-when he needs his girlfriend by it side . The last message from him was:that it’s hard for him this break up and he feels it’s too soon and it’s not supposed to and now and like that and that I’m very important and meaningful for him , but the only thing that comfort him, is that we have so unique connection that he is sure we will have another opportunity to be togheter when the time is right . My question is what should I do ? I feel like it was a mistake that we break up , and maybe I should have stay in contact with him ?
You might be going all in too soon. I would take a couple steps back and figure out what it is that you want from a man and put yourself first. It takes time to build attraction and sometimes people text for attention only. You don’t know there intentions until you continue to date someone and see them face to face. I wouldn’t take this personally and I would suggest mirroring what they are doing to you.
One of the best things you can do is when your man pulls away is give him some time and space. This will allow him to look at his behavior toward you and if he loves you, he will come back to you. It is advised to avoid any confrontation because it can play against you. It’s time to reevaluate your relationship with him and think about what may have gone wrong in this relationship. This will create a tension between you two and put the ball in his court. He will have a choice to come back. When he does that, you will be in control of the situation and in a better position. This is because if he chooses to come back to you, he is choosing you which is a clear sign that he desires you.
"'We' is a state of mind and heart. It means that wherever one partner is, the other is present in their thoughts. Partners who consider themselves a 'we' act that way. When you talk to partners who live with and in the heart of their beloved, you experience that commitment in every way they present themselves. They communicate a pride in belonging to their partner. It's a powerful feeling of 'us' over anyone or anything else.
I read your article and found it useful as this was my first serious relationship and he has decided to ended by ghosting (he did however tried to end it before and pleaded to give us a chance) after texting him concerned about why he is not answering and that was a week after me not contacting him he calls me ending it anws I pleaded for him to come by tmrw so we can talk I wasn’t sure he was going thru it and I ended up going through binge drinking to the extent he came by and saw me all drunk and vunrable he left shortly (I do not remember that much) and ended calling him once and texting him a huge message about admitting what we had was real
